Fiona Apple成长于曼哈顿，来自于一个艺术家庭，父亲是一个演员，母亲是歌手、舞蹈家、厨师和家庭妇女。父母离婚后，Apple姐妹俩和母亲一道住在纽约一座公寓里。Apple 8岁时从音乐中找到了安慰并开始学弹钢琴。在1994年高中毕业后，Apple看望了她在洛杉矶的父亲，在那她录了一盘Demo带，然后大量拷贝寄给别人。之后她回到纽约过圣诞，Apple捎了一盘带给一位老同学，这位同学在一位唱片公司老板家做保姆。接下去的事情很简单：这位老板（Kathryn Schenker）听到了Demo带，并在圣诞晚会上播给了著名制作人Andrew Slater，随后他们便开始了持续至今的合作，apple签下了Sony的合约。
